**Overview** A current pulse is applied from the top of the probe, generating a magnetic field around the entire probe. By installing a float with a powerful magnet on the probe, it distorts the magnetic field in the vicinity. This distortion occurs only at the moment the current pulse is applied and propagates as a mechanical elastic wave towards both ends of the probe. The time of this propagation is measured to display the absolute position of the float.
